Citrus bergamot has drawn attention for its role in supporting healthy cholesterol levels. But the fruit source, the extraction process, the active compounds and the daily quantity vary dramatically between products — and the label rarely tells you which you're holding.
Most people don't go looking for citrus bergamot. They find it after a routine appointment, when someone tells them their cholesterol is higher than they'd like it to be.
By that point, plenty has usually been tried already. Less red meat. More walking. Porridge instead of toast. Maybe a fish oil, a red yeast rice, a plant sterol spread. So when bergamot comes up — in a forum, from a friend, in a podcast — the natural next step is to search for it and buy one.
That's where it gets difficult. Dozens of bottles appear, and they look close to identical: the same orange-yellow fruit on the label, the same round numbers, prices from under ten dollars to over fifty. Nothing on the front of the bottle explains the gap.
Here's the part that isn't obvious: 500 mg of citrus bergamot from one brand is not necessarily comparable to 500 mg from another. What the number means depends on which part of the fruit was used, how it was processed, which compounds survived that process, and whether the daily serving resembles the quantities used in published research.

Why researchers became interested in this unusual Italian fruit
Bergamot is not a fruit most people have eaten. It's too sour and too bitter to enjoy raw, and it grows in commercial quantities almost nowhere except a narrow coastal strip of Calabria, in the far south of Italy. For most of its history its value was in the peel oil — the citrus note in Earl Grey tea and in classical perfumery.
What eventually drew scientific attention wasn't the oil. It was the juice and the pale inner layer of the fruit, and an unusual family of polyphenols found there in concentrations not typical of other citrus.
Two of those compounds come up repeatedly in the literature: brutieridin and melitidin. They are structurally distinctive, and they are the reason bergamot is studied differently from grapefruit or orange extracts. Researchers have examined standardised bergamot polyphenol fractions in human trials looking at lipid markers, with results that vary by extract, dose and study population.
The important detail for a shopper is this: that research was done on standardised, characterised extracts — not on dried bergamot fruit powder. A product can be honestly labelled "citrus bergamot" and still bear very little resemblance to the material used in those studies.
The part of the fruit matters
A bergamot is not one ingredient. The outer coloured peel, the essential oil pressed from it, the juice, and the pale spongy layer just beneath the skin are chemically different materials with different polyphenol profiles. They are not interchangeable.
Peel is the cheapest and most abundant fraction, and it's what's left over after the juice and oil industries have taken what they want. A supplement built largely on ground peel can be produced for a fraction of the cost of one built on the juice and inner fruit — and the front of the bottle will read the same either way.
So the first thing worth checking is whether the brand will tell you which fraction they used. Many won't, because there's nothing in it for them.
Milligrams alone don't tell the whole story
Bergamot products compete on a single number: 500 mg, 1,000 mg, 1,200 mg. Bigger looks better, and it's the easiest claim to make.
But that figure almost always describes total ingredient weight — everything in the capsule. Fibre, pectin, natural sugars, water content and inert plant material all count towards it. None of those are the compounds the research was interested in.
What you actually want to know is how much of the relevant polyphenol content is in there, which is a different question and a harder one to answer. Products that have gone to the trouble of standardising their extract will usually say so, and will state the polyphenol content as a percentage or an absolute amount. Products that haven't will lead with the big round number and leave it there.
Check for a verified polyphenol profile
This is the technical heart of it, and it's simpler than it sounds. Bergamot's studied activity is attributed to a group of polyphenols, and two of them — brutieridin and melitidin — are close to unique to this fruit.
Their presence in a finished product is a useful signal for two reasons. First, they indicate the extract came from the fractions of the fruit that carry them. Second, they're difficult to fake: verifying them requires actual laboratory analysis of the finished batch, not a supplier's word.
A brand that can name the polyphenols it verifies, and show testing that confirms them, is telling you something meaningful. A brand that lists only "citrus bergamot extract" may still be selling a good product — but you have no way to know.
How the extract is processed matters
Raw bergamot is mostly water, sugars, fibre and acid, with the polyphenols making up a small fraction of it. Every extraction process is an attempt to keep that small fraction and discard the rest.
Done carefully, you end up with a concentrated, consistent polyphenol fraction — batch after batch, the same composition. Done cheaply, you end up with dried fruit powder that happens to contain some polyphenols, in amounts that shift with the harvest.
You don't need to understand the chemistry to use this. Just look for whether the brand describes its process at all. Specifics — how the fraction is separated, how it's concentrated, how it's stabilised — suggest a company that knows what it bought. Silence usually means commodity powder.

This is the one that catches most people, and it's the easiest to check.
Some labels advertise the amount per capsule. Others advertise the amount per serving — and the serving might be two, three or four capsules. Two bottles claiming "1,000 mg" can differ by a factor of four in what you actually swallow per day, and in how long the bottle lasts.
